Elements of Fiction
The Elements of Fiction are the main elements which fiction writers use to develop a story and its theme. These elements are the character, plot, point of view, setting, style, and theme. These are the first steps towards understanding a reading.
Character is the figure or figures in the story. There may be one or multiple characters in a story which all have different roles in the story.
Plot is a series of major events that carry and move the action and excitement in the story. (refer to the image above) More on this portion below.
Point of View is the vantage point(perspective) from which the narrative is told. A narrative may b told from a first-person(I, we) or third person(he, she, they) point of view.
Setting is the time period and location(s) where the story takes place.
Style is the author’s type of diction (choice of words) and syntax (arrangement of words).
Theme(s) is the central and dominating idea (or ideas) in a story.

When analyzing the plot of a story, you want to focus on finding five main points. These are the Introduction, Rising Action, Climax, Falling Action, and Conclusion.

The Introduction is the beginning of the story. The introduction sets up the story normally providing readers with information about the setting and characters.
The Rising Action is the first spark of action within the story. It is the series of actions that lead up to the biggest and most important part of the story.
The Climax is the peak of the story where the author attempts to reveal the main idea and main actions of the storyline.
The Falling Action is what happens after the climax. It aids towards closing out the story and calms the tone of the story preparing readers for the conclusion.
